Family vaccation at Villa del Mare, May 2016
Some further, more practical, comments: The basketball court is real, huge and offers fantastic space for any kind of outdoor sports with the kids. Just be mindful that it is also a bit rough (all concrete, the iron basketball basket's being rusty, no net around the place etc.); that said, we used this vast open space many times to play football, Frisbee, etc.
A rental car is a must have. Within a 5-10min drive you can find several small, but well equipped, supermarkets - and there is no shortage of nice restaurants in Akrotiri and Chania area. Due to the prevailing strong winds (usually from north-west) you may want to prefer going to wind protected beaches if you are travelling with children (for the same reason the house's drive way down to the water is now closed as the lowest section of the concrete path got destroyed by strong waves). On the Akrotiri peninsula such calm and sandy beaches can be found in the bay of Stavros (10min drive) and Marathi (25min drive). Both beaches have also some very nice little restaurants on offer. The old town of Chania and the historic port area are nothing but wonderful and also just a 25min drive away from the house.
Semaine de rêve, nous conseillons tous la villa del mare aux futurs voyageurs!
The cleaning service, including bed lines and towels change, is made twice a week. We only had few inconveniences at our arrival (one fridge, hair dryer and one conditioner not working), but everything has been fixed promptly. The house was clean, with a modern look and the kitchen has everything you need to cook properly.
We would like to thank 'Angelo' who has been taking care of the property, he speaks very well Italian and has been very kind and helpful with us.
The swimming pool is beautiful and clean. A car is a must to reach the beaches and the shops nearby. In Stavros there isn't that much to do, only some small supermarkets on the contrary Chania, which is about 20-25 min by car, is a more lively city. The prices in the restaurants are cheap; the cost for a dinner can vary between € 12 a € 24 (except once in Chania where we spent € 30 per person). The only negative aspect was the air conditioning not working in the car we rented.
La casa è molto bella, costruita quattro anni fa, e la posizione è fantastica. Tramonti stupendi.
WOW WOW WOW!
My husband and I (34&38) traveled with our 3 children (14, 11 & 3) and mother in law (60) w/c 14th April for 1 week. Weather was glorious despite the forecast predicting rain. There was none.
Suitable for all ages, the only snag would be the depth of the pool with not very confident swimmers.
We shopped at INKA & Lidl, filled the cupboards and fridge and had BBQ's a couple of nights. We also ate at The Roadhouse Pub & Grill which served excellent American food and fantastic steaks.
A car is very necessary, it's quite a distance away on foot to the nearest beach or shop.
The owner stayed in the next villa so any problems we could go over and tell him, he was over right away.
I have only been back in the UK 12hrs and I'm looking to book again. You have to literally see it to believe it. I've never been so sad to leave such a beautiful place.
Just have to add, if you dread returning to mounds of washing then threat no more, all my washing done before I left so the whole holiday was stress free from start to finish ;-)
Go on, get it booked. You won't be disappointed X
The pool is a good size and 2.5 meters at the deep end. The pool is not heated so the water was cool as early in the season, so not yet warmed up but we expected this. The weather was very warm so it was well used but the local beaches are so beautiful we made good use of these too. Ample pool towels were provided. There is a very good BBQ on the lower garden level.
We were disappointed by the weather in the first week as although sunny and warm it was extremely windy for 4/5 days and thought that this may just be a very windy spot. It’s not. Just unusual weather for the time of year.
A car is essential. Close by there are at least five beaches, all with beach bars/tavernas/sunbeds. The food is typically Greek and very reasonably priced. Food is more expensive at the Marina in Chania but expected. There is a small friendly supermarket in Stavros and Kounoupidiana is a 10 minute drive and has a selection of shops and a large Spar and Carrefour. Another 5 minute drive and you are into Chania. Our best meal was at the windmill on Stavros main beach, great food with a little more selection than usual and the setting was beautiful but we didn’t really have a bad meal anywhere. English was widely spoken and everyone was friendly and relaxed.
If you are thinking of booking this Villa, don’t hesitate, you will not be disappointed.
